Small Animal Maceration Day 2
So, when I went in today, everything smelled even worse than it did yesterday. Again, I want to say that if you have a weak stomach or some type of condition that gives you a weak stomach, please to NOT attempt to macerate anything. You will end up throwing up. Promise. I started by pulling everything out of the peroxide to take a look at the progress. From left to right: Bobcat, Badger,...

Small Animal Maceration Day 1
I want to start off this post about maceration by saying that this is not for someone that has a weak stomach or that may be pregnant or have any severe medical conditions that can give them a weak stomach. The smell is bad. Really bad. You will feel nauseous and gag at least once. Moving past that, here are the things you will need: Hydrogen Peroxide- I bought mine at a store, which means...

Anonymous asked: What is Fernweh? / Moving in with my boyfriend was probably the worst thing we've done to our relationship. Being together isn't special anymore - it's an all the time thing that makes us take one another for granted. We get sick of being around each other so often and incidentally fight over a lot of things that don't matter. / Also, isn't it a little hypocritical...

Mascerating a Bone
Is anyone interested in seeing this process? I have a few bones that I need to work on at school and I’d like to post a how-to for anyone that is interested. I want to note that none of the animals that I am working on were actually killed just to be mascerated. The two that I am going to be working on myself were found in the field by geology students and collected. Later on in the summer I...

dudeitsbonnie asked: Your post about volunteering as an on staff paleontologist made my day :) It's so awesome to hear about little kids getting excited about rocks and fossils compared to being excited over a video game. I wish there was a way you could have given him some smaller fragments of bone to take home. I grew up in a rock shop and we would always have these little specimen boxes for sale. Had bone,...

Why I Love Paleontology:
Every Saturday I volunteer as an on staff paleontologist. The school that I go to has a deal with the museum that all of the Paleo Kids get to volunteer there and help out with anything. I am an undergrad, but kids don’t need to know the technical stuff, especially when they’re super excited to talk to someone that loves dinosaurs as much as them. I’ve seen a lot of parents that...
